Patrick Hunter Ford
My name is Patrick Hunter Ford. I go by Hunter, have done so ever since I was a baby. I am 40 years old and a proud gay Irish man. I was born in St. Louis, Missouri. I am an adoptee. When I was 2 years old my mother, brother and I moved to Oakland, California. The Bay Area is/was my home until 1992 when I was arrested for murder in St. Louis. I have been in prison going on 18 years now, where I am serving a life without parole sentence. I only blame myself for my predicament.
I have many an interest but are limited to what I can experience (I am in prison after all). Nonetheless, I enjoy all art forms, literature, music, writing, films, animals, yoga, my religion—Buddhism, sports, and helping victims of crime raise awareness of the effects of crime on the human psyche.
I’ve been an artist in one form or another all my life. Before prison, I focused on painting, metal sculpturing, graphic design, and music. Because Missouri’s prisons limit approved art materials, for instance no paints, I am currently confined to lead pencils, colored pencils, and ink pens.
Life inspires my artistry. Especially colors, but also the joy I receive from both creating and the joy my art gives others.
It is a must not only for the GLBT community, but for the whole world population, to know that just because an individual is in prison doesn’t mean that they’re worthless. Yes most in prison are real criminals who rightly deserve their sentences. However, there are those who are actually innocent, and those who are not but were too young, and/or a first time offender, who if released would become a productive individual in society and never commit another criminal act.
I want to thank the GLBT community and Black and Pink for their spiritual support and friendship. Without either, doing time would be just that…time.
